August 2012
The journey starts several months before boarding on a ship. The first step is to find an agency in the plethora of offers on the internet. My friend Andreas, recommended to me the Agency Frachtschiffreisen Pfeiffer GmbH in Germany.

The next step is to find a route that corresponds to my objectives. Obviously Puerto Limon in Costa Rica is not a very common destination because the port is relatively small. Once a ship found it is now time to take care of the abundant personal paperwork:

·        sign a transportation contract

·        obtain a medical certificate not older than 60 days from the boarding date

·        sign a route and calendar changes acceptation

·        sign a disclaimer for damages and compensations in case of incident

·        check the validity of the passport and the vaccination certificate

·        contract a deviation insurance

The most important after signing the contract is to pay the ticket, i.e.: approximately  100 Euros per day on board. The deviation insurance of 160.- Euros has to be added which would cover the costs to deviate the ship in case of major sickness or worse. I am warned, there will be no doctor on board. This job is assumed by an Officer on cargo ships.
The next step is to look after the ship. Her name was communicated by my Agency: the HS Schubert with IMO 9337597 (International Maritine Organisation).

I follow her in real time on http://www.marinetraffic.com website. In principle the ship does a rotation within one and a half month and stops in more than ten ports in North Europe and the Caribbeans.

_____________________________________________
September 2012
I sign the contract with Pfeiffer. In principle, the boarding is planned on January 13, 2013 in Le Havre France.

The ship
I am often asked what is the nationality of the ship ?
so, she was constructed in China by Wenchong Shipyards in Guangzhou, the owner is German, the operator is French, the flag is Liberian and the Captain is Polish – easy isn’t it !

_____________________________________________
October 2012
I track the ship on the internet, so I understand that she stops between 12 et 36 hours in Caribbean ports, i.e.: Kingston (Jamaica), Cartagena (Colombia), Santo Tomas de Castilla (Guatemala), Puerto Cortes (Honduras), Puerto Moin (Costa Rica) and finally a last stop in Kingston before to cross back the Atlantic towards Europe.

_____________________________________________
November 2012
I continue the tracking in the ports of Rotterdam, Brunsbuettel (Germany), Muuga (Estonia), Kronstadt (St Petersburg), and return through Stadersand (Germany), Brunsbuettel (Germany), Rotterdam the Netherlands), Antwerpen (Belgium), and finally Le Havre (France) before to cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean.

December 2012
A first surprise happens, the boarding is advanced by ten days to January 1st, 2013, so I will probably spend the New Year’s Eve in Le Havre. The preparation of my luggage will therefore be substancially brought forward, which proves that traveling on a cargo ship requires to be flexible.

I notice on the site www.marinetraffic.com that the ship leaves the Jamaica on December 15th to cross the Altlantic and will be arriving in Europe ten days later, i.e.: around Christmas.

I receive the last instructions from Pfeiffer, so I understand now how the boarding process works. It will be done under the guidance of the CMA-CGM, the operating company of HS Schubert. I have to tell them in which hotel I will be staying in Le Havre and when. I have to be there preferably one or two days before the planned boarding.
The boarding is confirmed for January 2nd. I can now buy a TGV ticket for December 31, depart in Neuchâtel at 08:10 am. I book a hotel room in « Les Gens de Mer », which was a hostel for sailors in the beginning of the 20th century.
A question subsists; will I be the only paying passenger on board ?
According to the ship documentation there will be one Owner’s appartment with double beds, shower, WC, living room, refrigeratior, TV, DVD, Video, HiFi, situated on the F deck, just under the bridge.
I contact the CMA-CGM by email who confirms that the ship will by arriving in Le Havre on January 1st and the commercial activities (unloading and loading) will take place on January 2nd.
I have to contact them again to know the exact boarding time on Monday 1st.
Now I feel confident because my tickets and bookings have been made at the correct dates.

_____________________________________________
Preparation of the luggage
My luggage allowance is a half a cubic meter, therefore I will have no problems with the weight, unlike the limitations imposed by the airlines. I will therefore take as many books as I want and also some for Romane and Clémence.
It is worth it not for forget important things because there will be no doctor and no supermarket on board.
The travel instructions from the Agency indicate that DVDs are much appreciated by the crew members. Therefore, I sollicit a few friends and ask them if they have some discs not used anymore. The harvest was fruitful. I eliminated all movies in French only right away, not very useful on an international vessel. Finally, I pack 20 DVDs.
Daniel, my ex PMI collegue, gives me two cartons of Marlboro which will be much appreciated, I am sure.
I have to figure out that I will be leaving Le Havre in the middle of winter, and will be arriving in the Caribbean ten days later in the middle of summer, i.e.: 25 degrees difference, therefore I have to adapt my wardrobe accordingly.

The « D day » has arrived on December 31st, Corinne drives me to the 8 o’clock TGV train in Neuchâtel.
In Paris St Lazare railway station I call the CMA-CGM who tells me that I can board on January 2nd at 10:00 am, at the Terminal de France where HS Schubert will be berthed.
In Le Havre a taxi drives me to the hotel Les Gens de Mer, but a guy behind the window looks at me and shakes his head… Later he explains that the hotel is closed due to a fire in the kitchen. He drives me to the hotel Richelieu two blocks away. While leaving the place, I see a calcinated electric fryer behind the house.
In this special New Year’s Eve, one of the only place that offers anything else than a 120 Euros Saint Silvester’s dinner is a Indian restaurant. I select a typical meal with excellent indian flavours for 30 Euros, including a questionnable indian wine.
The weather has turned ugly and cold therefore I am back to my hotel room at 2200.

Janvier 2013vauban_mini
This first day of 2013 is going to be nice, the sky is blue but the city looks abandoned. The gull calls have replaced those of the roisterers. I discover the city while using the brand new tramway inaugurated short before Christmas.
I visit the Vauban Docks, recently rebuilt into a commercial center where unfortunately, only one restaurant and a multi-screens cinema are open today.

_____________________________________________
Day 1: January 2nd 2013
I order a taxi at 09:00 am from the hotel and he arrives at 10:00 am only, so I will be late at the ship. After 20 minutes drive along the endless docks, we stop at the Terminal de France (TDF) checkpoint where the driver and I have to produce our identifications.schubert_2_mini
The TDF is the most recent terminal constructed especially for high tonnage wessels like the HS Schubert.

Advise to travelers
Utilize taxi Companies recommended by the Agencies because only those accredited are authorized to access inside the harbour facilities that are under strict surveillance.

The emotion is high when I see HS Schubert for the first time a headof us, below giant gantry cranes. She looks like a small toy.
A sailor is waiting for me on the poopdeck, checks my passport, then an Officer shows me my appartment on F deck.
I cross the second passenger, Madeleine, who boarded in Hamburg for the whole rotation of 40 days and will therefore disembark in Hamburg around le_havre_miniFebruary 6.
A moderate wind of 4 beaufort is forecasted tonight which is good news because I don’t know my degree of resistance to seasickness on a ship that moves round the clock. This will be my first real live test.
We leave the dockside at 2 pm with 4363 nautical miles ahead of us towards Kingston Jamaïca. It will take 10 to 12 days, depending on the weather.

We leave the Hague lighthouse on port side a few hours later which is the first cape we pass on this journey.

_____________________________________________
Day 2
The night was quiet and the weather is dry this morning, the sky is grey with a strong swell. I didn’t sleep well because I had 25 °C in my bedroom. The good news is that I was not affected at all by seasickness although the night was somehow shaky.
We leave the French coast by passing the Ouessant island in the night, then turn port side on course 232° towards the Azores archipelago, that we should reach in 3 to 4 days.
After the breakfast at 07:30 am, I undertake the exploration of the castel. I discover a small fitness room with an appartment bike, two machines and one table tennis table.
The 3rd Officer tells me that during the previous return across the Atlantic ocean, they had a strong storm that lasted 3 days and the ship was rolling 18°, value recorded and still visible on the clinometer on the bridge – it must have been a nightmare…
The weather forecast announces moderate conditions for the next few days.
I spend an hour in the gym room to tryout the equipment. It did good to me after so many days without physical activities. I previously make some housekeeping because the weights are spread over the whole place.
A excellent sweet & sour fish is served for dinner, prepared by our affectionately called Cooky.
The Captain lends me his email account so I can send a first mail to Corinne, Anouk and Guillaume.
I end up the evening in the Crew Recreation Room drinking a beer with the Philipinos, who watch a DVD of a pop music concert in Philippin language.

_____________________________________________
The vessel in a few words and definitions
– the castel is the superstructure of a vessel above the hull
– the bridge is the compartment of a vessel located on the top floor of the castel, where the navigation is conducted under the guidance of the watch Officer, and where the Captain leeds the operations
– the Officers’ mess is the canteen or cafeteriaaussiere_mini
– the passageways are the footpathes between the bunkers all along the vessel, non-covered
– the rolling is the oscillation port side / starboard, along the longitudinal axis of the vessel, caused by the waves hitting the sides. A rolling vessel can induce equilibrium disorders, the well known seasickness. The Officers play with the course, the speed and the ballasts of the vessel to modify her inertia to optimize the behavior in the waves
– the pitching is the movement induced by the waves that hit the front and lifts the vessel: the poop sinks, and vice-versa
– safety drills are scheduled regularly for the crew, today: loss of the rudder !
– the vessel weights 9000 tons, can load 15000 tons of sea freight, is 170 meters long and 30  wide
– the cargo office is located right besite the gangway to the dockside, is the place where the manipulation of the containers and the ballasts are controlled. The anti heeling control system is also in that office.

_____________________________________________
Day 3
Another calm night and the temperature dropped down to 18°C in my appartment, which confirms that regulating the temperature in a vessel is not an easy thing.
I go down to the breakfast and notice that I am too early because I forgot to move my watch back one hour, so I arrived to the Officers’ mess at 06:30 am instead of 07:30. It is my fault because the changes are clearely reminded on several doors throughout the castel. We have to go back seven hours until we reach Costa Rica.
It makes sense to synchronize all watches on board to avoid a chaos on the ship.
At 3:00 pm the wind is increasing to 5-6 beaufort and we navigate towards a grey curtain of clouds that drastically reduce the visibility. The ship is pitching more and more.
René, our Philipino steward, loads our refrigerators with fruits, among others oranges from South Africa that don’t have completed their journey yet…
The bridge receives the order from the Router to change the course by 10°, i.e.: 240°, which means we will be crossing the Azores archipelago right in the middle instead of passing by the south. The reasons will remain obscur to me.
I am explained that the Operating company uses Routing Experts that give advises on the options taken by the bridge, and may ask them to change.
The speed was brought down by 2-3 knots to reduce the pitching of the vessel that regularly hits in the waves.

_____________________________________________
The bridge
The bridge is the strategic place where everything happens. It is the brain of the giant located in the highest point of the ship, on the last floor of the castel.

Everything is there: the sacrosanct sea charts table, the numerous control panels, the radar screens, the communication terminals (fax, VHF, mailing) and I will stop here…schubert_mini
In order to avoid miscommunication when using the VHF and on the ship, the times are always spoken as 4 digit numbers, e.g.: half past height in the morning is said: zero eight three zero (0830).
I go on the bridge at least three or four times every day to get the latest news, our position, the weather forecasts and more, that I report back to Madeleine, since she doesn’t leave often her appartment.
It is from the bridge that I send the few emails using Captain’s account.
I spend much time to discuss, mainly with the 1st Officer, who is very friendly and likes to exchange ideas on physics and other topics. The other Officers are less prolix but seem to appreciate my presence because when I tell them « see you I am going » they answer with a certain disappointment « already » or « why ». I must say that a watch of 4 hours, in a complete darkness, only lit by radar screens, is somehow long and boring.

The roof of the castel above the bridge, is called the monkey deck. It holds all sorts of antennas, radars, the magnetic compas which is the reference for all other instruments, the Territorial Waters Flag and the vessel data recorder (the « black box » that is orange), similar to those onboard aircrafts. The monkey deck is not a place to stay. If you do so you may well look like an egg left 2 minutes in a microwave oven.

_____________________________________________
Day 4
The see was rough last night, the vessel was pitching strongly, which is not only unhealthy for herself and the freight, but also unpleasant for the sleepers who end up crushed against the walls.
Interesting to see that all cabines and compartments have all furniture and apparatus attached to the floors with tiny cables to prevent them to slip all over. Obviously, the machines in the fitness room are also fastened to the walls. Moreover, it is strongly recommended not to put your glass of beer on any table prior to have placed a rubber mat in between, a word to the wise…
My program today was dedicated to the unavoidable visits to the bridge, the laundry, my daily gym program, my reading, watch the movie Wasabi with Jean Reno and to play a few Rummikub games with Madeleine.
Around 10:00 pm we will be crossing the middle of the Azores archipelago, with hopefully a strong enough GSM signal for our mobile phones.

_____________________________________________
A few rules on board
– the meal schedule is fixed: breakfast 07:30 am, lunch 12 o’clock and dinner 5:30 pm
– if you leave the door of your appartment open you indicate that you are available and if you close it, you don’t want to be disturbed
– you close the porthole curtains of your cabin in the night unless you will be reprimanded by the watch Officer who is right above you and cannot scrutinize the sea properly because of the parasite light you create outside
– you wear slippers in your appartment in order to keep it clean as much as possible. The decks are often full of salt or soot
– there is no smoking ban on board but the good sense would be not to in common compartments, e.g.: where people eat.
– you lock your appartment door in the harbours because there are many foreigners embarking to work on board
– the idea to have your own pharmacy with general remedies doesn’t make much sense, because the one on bord is very well equiped. However, don’t forget your own specific remedies if you need any.

_____________________________________________
Day 5
We cross the Azores archipelago in the middle of the night without having caught any GSM signal because we are too far from the coasts. We are facing a strong wind of 5-6 beaufort with a superb blue sky and we start the long haul of 2500 miles aiming to the Windward Passage between Haïti et Cuba.

_____________________________________________
A truck of the seas
To keep it simple, our container carrier is like a truck that is paid to transport goods between point A and point B. Its unique role is to make sure the cargo latch_miniis delivered in good condition, e.g.: avoid power cuts on the reefers or any other troubles. The crew doesn’t know what’s in the boxes unless they contain dangerous goods or if one can smell pineapple around some of them. The Operator, the CGM-CGM and its agents in the harbours, takes care of all the rest: to consolidate the orders for transportation, to organize berth places in the harbours, to unload and load the cargo, to help the rare passengers to embark and disembark, to set the « Shore Leave Expiry » time and even to order the fuel. They also hire the workers who operate our own cranes whenever they are used and secure the containers using lashing rods and turnbuckles.

_____________________________________________
Day 6
The roughest night is behind us. The vessel was heavily struck by the sea whereby everything suffered: the ship, the boxes and the people.
I take the opportunity of a weather finally calmed down, although with a strong swell, to visit the front castel on my own. The journey is fairly tortuous, I have to hold myself carefully.pathway_mini

The experience is magic, imagine a giant of 25’000 tons navigating with 38 km/h on a water that became turquoise, with no vibrations, in a complete silence with only the water bubbling against the bow.
One has to say that the machines are under the wind, 160 meters at the other end of the vessel.

_____________________________________________
The crew
The crew is composed of 21 members, half are from the Philippines. The Officers are Polish, Romanian, Montenegran and Croatian. The crew is fairly friendly with us, however they find odd and mysterious how can passengers pay to travel on a cargo ship where there is no entertainement, no animation, the food not very elaborated, for a journey that takes weeks…
Life on board is pretty tough for the sailors, the work never ends. A working day is 8 hours at sea and 12 hours in harbours. A watch lasts 4 hours either onphil_mini the bridge at sea, or in the ports.
When the vessel enters or leaves a harbour, at any time of the day or night, everybody must be « sur le pont » and one movement takes between 1 and 2 hours.
At sea the tasks of the non-navigant staff are diverse and varied, e.g.: restless fighting of the rust, painting, washing the decks, arranging the hawsers (thick ropes to berth the ship) or cleaning inside the castel, if the weather is too bad outside.
Each sailor can have an individual email account against a « modest » contribution of 25 USD, using a provider named Telaurus SMT (Ship Management Tool).

The Sunday lunch menu is always a little bit more elaborated than those of the week days. Today: T-bone steak, french fries, gratin and ice cream.
I bring four DVDs down to the Recreation Room on deck A to the Philippinos, and drink a beer to close my day.
To cultivate a good image, I offer a 36’s carton of Beck’s beer to the crew.

_____________________________________________
Day 7
It was the quietest night since the depart from Le Havre. I visit the poopdeck right after my breakfast to get a feel of the temperature and I conclude that I can switch to the short pants mode.
Since the ship is much quiter now, I can start my drawing, what I planned to do before boarding.
We already made  2441 miles and we still have 1855 ahead of us to reach Kingston.
The Captain prints a response from Corinne that he slips under my door. The news are good from Bevaix, although Mortimer (the cat) feels lonesome.
At the sunset around 6 pm Cat the 1st Officier is very lucky and sees a « green flash ». A rare optical effect in which the tip of the sun’s disk suddenly and briefly changes to a vivid green, either as the last remnant of the setting sun vanishes or just at the moment of sunrise.
Like almost every day around 4 pm I go up to the bridge, get a green tea and discuss with the 1st Officier. I know it is the time of his watch for the month of January. We talk about physics and paranormal phenomenons, it is his hobby. We also exchange music files using bluetooth on our respective devices. The challenge is to bring an Android to talk to a Mac, in what we obviously didn’t succeed.

_____________________________________________
Day 8
A wind of 5-6 beaufort pushes us the whole night what created a strong rolling of 10°, recorded on the clinometer in the bridge.poupe_mini
I was wondering, while dreaming on the poopdeck in the morning, watching the immensity of the ocean, how long would I survive if I would fall into the water, i.e.: 30 minutes, 60 minutes ? In order to avoid answering the question, it is best to stay humble and not to approach the barriers too close, especially if I am alone and if the sea is rough.

My thoughts come just at the right time because a security audit will take place at 1 pm. We have to deposit our live jackets and survival suits in front of our appartment door.

_____________________________________________
Day 9
I wake up every day earlier because we have to move our watches back one hour at midnight according to the plan displayed all over the castel. So, every safety_minichange extends our nights by one hour.
The weather gets resolutely calme and we enter Summer. More and more flying fishes, small and big, takeof ahead of our bow in a wave of panic.

_____________________________________________
The cargo
– is constituted by containers (also called boxes)
– the reefers are the containers equiped with controled temperature agregates. They are always of white color and can contain meat at -25° C, fruits at +10° C or electronic devices at +18° C
– the reefers are electrically connected to the vessel if they are full. It is therefore easy to see those empty because no cable is connected
– the reefers are generally empty between Europe and the Caribbean and full of exotic fruits the other way.
– due to these reefers the ship is a big power station.

I send a third message to the family and my birthday wishes to Bernard.

_____________________________________________
Day 10
Awake very early as always, I admire a beautiful sunrise on the poopdeck before the breakfast.
Today, I eliminate the socks until February 21, my return to Switzerland.
We see neither Haïti on port side nor Cuba on starboard because we are too far from the coasts. However, we are approaching Turtle Island in Honduras that appears ahead. In the 17th century, Turtle Island was a pirate base. A group of pirates, called Brethren of the Coast, made it their center.
After passing the island we change course, more south which increases the rolling of the vessel, what Madeleine notices right away in her appartment.
Emotions
The big crossing reaches its end. I have been able to fill my days without to be bored one single minute. I discovered a different way of life. There is no exterior sollicitation, no lawn mower, no vole to hunt in the garden, no news, no postman and no internet access. Due to the absence of external interactions, time passes differently. I have been able to center on myself in a restricted environment without bad conscience, which is not common in our calvinist and hyperactiv society.

_____________________________________________
Day 11
Today will be different from the previous days because we will be going ashore and visit Kingston Jamaica.
We navigate west along the south coast of Cuba.

Anouk writes to me the astonishing story of Aline, the mother of Corine, working in an NGO in Nicaragua, who should be boarding on HS Schubert and carte_minitake over my appartment in Puerto Moin to go back to Europe.
We see Kingston at 11 am ahead of us. We have an appointment with the pilot at 1300. He will be taking the lead of the operations to enter into the harbour and instruct the two tags which will do the heavy part of the job. The Pilot ladder is already on standby on starboard at 1 meter high (as requested by the pilot). We pass between mangrove islands and small military facilities. Pelicans are plunging and fishing in the outer harbour.
We are berthed at the dockside at 1430.

_____________________________________________
Visit of Kingston, Jamaica
Madeleine and I start our city tour after having received the greenlight from the Immigration Officers. The Agent offers one of their car with driver for 50 USD. We take with us three philippinos to bring them to the doctor in a private clinic. It is custom to use private clinic rather than public hospitals because they need too much time and the ship cannot wait.
We start the visit of the city with a driver who speaks an English that smells good Jamaica that I hardly understand. I try to pick up a word here and there and attempt to reconstitute a sentence around it.
We start the visit with the Redemption Song statue in Emancipation Park., the most controversial pieces of Jamaican artwork, representing a nude couple kingston_minilooking up the sky,

than we go to the statue of the great Bob. We pass below Beverly Hills which is the hill where live the rich people, Usain Bolt among them !
The visit continues in the old historical town with some colonial style houses, picturesque but said to be « dangerous ». The driver closes the windows while telling us that this is the place of the good, the bad and the ugly. It takes me a few seconds to understand what he says. Than we make a round of Parade Square, uptown and end up in Usain Bolt’s disco, located in a closed quarter for rich black, white and asiatic, where are plenty of restaurants of all kinds. We select an Italian pizzeria.
I notice in passing for Corinne, that the red pans are trendy and not only by the allucinated reggae fans !
We pickup our Philippinos and go back to the ship after an unforgettable visit.

_____________________________________________
Day 12
The commercial activities went on the whole night and take longer than expected.
The departure is postponed from 0700 to 1100 and we finally start at 1600. Two tags turn the vessel in the dock. After having left the two last red and green buoys, distant less than 100 meters from each other, the pilot leaves the ship and we navigate to the east a few miles, them turn full south direction Cartagena Colombia.
The crew is exhausted after these hectic 24 hours and no sailor had the opportunity to go ashore to visit the town. It is the risk of the job.
Kingston is a hub where the containers will be offloaded from one vessel and then collected by another one which serves different ports. It’s a transit harbour between Australia, the USA and Europe, which explains the intense traffic, much more important than the economical activities of the country.

_____________________________________________
Day 13
After the big crossing of 11 days, the trip will now look much different because we will have opportunities to go ashore within the next days.
I send an e-mail to Anouk to establish the contact with Aline Duc of Sion, possibly a cousin of Gregory !
A nice beaufort 7 under the sun offers extraordinary sensations, full of positiv emotions. It is not the day to visit the front castel because the pathways are flooded by the waves striking the hull, and the ship shakes a lot.
We have appointment with the Pilot of Cartagena, who will be boarding at 2000, on port side and he asks one meter high.
For each harbour the Pilot communicates his instructions by radio, i.e.: the exact meeting point, the time of boarding, the side he wants to board (depends on the weather conditions) and the hight between the water and the step ladder.
We are berthed at the dockside at 2215 and the cranes start to work right away.

_____________________________________________
Day 14
The operations last the whole night.

A black barge full of hydrocarbones is parked beside us and is filling our tanks, as of 0430 this early morning. We will be loading 750 tons of fuel which will be just sufficient to go back to Europe. The fuel has approximately the viscosity of molasses and the color of motor oil that has largely passed the replacement deadline. A sample is taken from each delivery and sent via DHL to New-Jersey in the USA for analysis. This procedure is current practice for most the vessels around the world and looks like a monopoly. The receiver of the samples is: www.oiltest.comcartagene_mini

Visit of Cartagena, Colombia
After the breakfast I propose to visit Cartagena. This offer made on the rush, stresses Madeleine because the Shore Leave Expiry is set at 1100, she is not ready and needs to go seven floors up in her apartment. Nevertheless, her curiosity is stronger than the stress and she decides come with me, although she already visited the town three times. It is 0820, Luckily our immigration papers have been prepared in advance, the schedule bus turning in the harbour picks us up, we pass the immigration checkpoint and we find a taxi, all that in 15 minutes, world record broken !
The driver brings us to the old historical city which breathes romantism, made of solemn monuments, ancient cloisters, churches and houses with cartagena_town_minipicturesque balconys.

in the new town he is very proud of, and finally to the San Felipe de Barajas Castle constructed in 1656 by the governor of Cartagena, Don Francisco de Murga.

We are back on the ship at 1045, 15 minutes before the Shore Leave Expiry, after an intense visit where I discovered the extraordinary historical city and I got a feel of the warm atmosphere of the place.
We leave the harbour at 1330 to Santo Tomas de Castilla in Guatemala. We will need 2 sea days to complete the 958 nautical miles.

Day 15
Today will be calm with a light breeze pushing us on 3/4.
It’s an ideal weather to go down to the fitness room to do 35 minutes bicycle in music, with no risk of falling because of the ship rolling.
Andrei lends me his hairclipper so I can cut my hair. All Europeans cut their hair to zero when they approach the Caribbean.
A dozen of dolphins with a playing mood jump into our bow wave, than swim to the wake and disappear quickly.
Two sea gulls plunge to ketch fishes while gliding in the air stream created by our ship.

_____________________________________________
Shore leave formalities
To go ashore in a harbour is not as easy as to debark from his our sailboat in Bevaix.
Firstly, an Officer prepares a list of all persons susceptible to go ashore (passengers and sailors), with a goods declaration made by everyone. Then the Immigration Services validate this list and establish personal shore passes. One has to bear the shore pass and a copy of the passport, walk to the harbour gate, sign the list established on the ship, and everything is ready to go ashore. Needless to say that one has to re-sign the same list when coming back to the ship.
The agent sets a limit beyong which it is no more possible to go ashore and everybody must be available on board. This limit is written on a white board located in the cargo office, right besite the gangway to the dockside.
I am told that Kingston has the toughest immigration procedures. One Immigration Officer is permanently sitted, day and night, near the gangway on our ship and checks the people going in and out, workers and us.
